SEN Teaching Assistant

Tradewind Recruitment are seeking an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist primary setting in Barnet from October 2026. This full-time, long-term opportunity is ideal for a dedicated education professional with previous UK school experience and a passion for supporting children with additional needs.

Role Summary

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups, helping them access learning, develop independence and build confidence throughout the school day. You will work alongside teachers and support staff to deliver personalised support aligned to individual learning plans.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with SEND
  • Support access to classroom learning and school activities
  • Assist pupils with communication and interaction skills
  • Promote independence and life skills development
  • Support emotional regulation and positive behaviour
  • Assist with sensory and regulation activities where required
  • Deliver and support interventions
  • Help pupils follow routines and structured learning programmes
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists and support staff
  • Follow safeguarding procedures and individual support plans

Candidate Requirements

To be considered, you must have:
  • Previous experience working in a UK school
  • Experience supporting children with SEND
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • A patient, nurturing and proactive approach
  • A commitment to safeguarding and pupil welfare
Experience supporting pupils with the following would be advantageous:
  • Autism and communication needs
  • Learning difficulties and additional needs
  • Social, emotional and behavioural needs
  • Sensory and regulation needs
  • PECS
  • Makaton
  • Visual timetables and communication strategies

Pay and Progression

Pay for this role is £95-£115 per day PAYE, depending on experience and relevant SEND support skills.
Candidates with substantial UK school-based SEND experience, specialist communication training such as PECS or Makaton, and proven success supporting pupils with complex needs are more likely to be considered for pay rates at the upper end of the scale.
