For children with autism the world of education can be extremely challenging, which is why SEN teachers have a pivotal role to play in supporting them through the process.
Often known as Autism Spectrum Disorder, autism affects social interaction and communication in numerous ways; as a result, various teaching methods are required to help children with autism to reach their potential.
It’s important to note that pupils will often have a unique way of looking at the world around them, and that an approach that works for one pupil, may not work for another.
A number of pupils that are diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum often remain in mainstream schools, meaning SEN teachers must recognise the signs and know how to support these pupils.
Among the range of behaviours, SEN teachers may look for difficulties in communicating, as well as those that struggle with change or with rules.

How can SEN teachers support children with autism?

Supporting pupils can take a wide range of forms, depending on the difficulties faced by any individual pupil.
Those that struggle with communication may benefit from the use of pictures or symbols, or may need instructions to be repeated.
Others may need longer to process information or may understand simplified sets of commands, while those with sensory needs may benefit from changes to the classroom environment.
Children on the autism spectrum may also require a degree of routine to their day and can find change difficult – in these instances, it’s important to ensure that all pupils are aware of the needs of those around them.
Ultimately, each child will need different levels of support and teachers will need to recognise what is needed in any given situation. For further information, read our article on strategies that support a range of SEN needs.

Build relationships and create safe spaces

SEN teachers may wish to agree on routines with parents and to communicate closely with them to ensure that the best approaches are being used.
Tackling issues such as bullying and teaching autism awareness is vital, as this helps to ensure that all pupils are comfortable in their school surroundings.
Such an approach may also include having a safe or quiet place when pupils with autism can go if they start to feel anxious or overly-stimulated.
The National Autism Society has a wide range of resources available for teachers that can help them support those with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

A career change into supply teaching?

If you’ve been a teacher for a while, or are considering a move into the classroom, have you thought about a career in supply teaching?
According to the report, two-thirds of teachers said they spent more than 50% of their time on non-teaching activities, with that figure rising to 77% of those in secondary schools. Three-quarters of teachers said that administrative work took up ‘too much’ time, while other tasks such as data recording, analysis and behavioural logging were also a cause of frustration.
Opting for supply teaching is a sure-fire way to remove this administrative burden, freeing you up to focus on what matters most – delivering memorable and engaging lessons in whichever classroom environment you end up in. You’ll be able to make a real difference to the lives of youngsters each and every day.

Take control of your workload

Teacher workloads often hog the headlines, and rightly so, given that 72% of teachers and leaders disagreed when asked if their workload should be deemed acceptable. Some 62% of teachers said they didn’t have enough control over their workload, another potential reason for picking teaching supply work.
A major benefit of supply work is that you can pick when you want to work and how often, giving you plenty of flexibility to make your work-life balance exactly how you desire.

Put your development first

Firstly, read this guide on why ongoing professional development matters.
Secondly, teaching is packed with career development opportunities, assuming that you have the time to complete it. Some 66% of teachers said competing priorities or their heavy workload limited their continued professional development opportunities, with cost another commonly cited factor.
However, if you take a role via Tradewind Recruitment, you’ll have access to top-quality CPD from The National College – a platform packed with over 2,500 courses, webinars and expert resources. Thanks to this exclusive partnership, you can put your development top of the agenda.

Secondary opportunities?

A quarter of teachers and leaders quizzed in the report said they would consider leaving the profession for reasons other than retirement within a year, mainly as a result of workload, policy changes and inspection pressures. The figure was higher among secondary school staff too.
While it’s important to recognise that some staff are looking to leave the profession, don’t overlook what it could mean for you. From new job openings in schools across the country, to other opportunities in supply teaching and beyond, the education has an abundance of roles which could suit your skills and experience.

Making savvy choices for your teaching career

Being a primary school teacher can be highly rewarding, but as with any career, it’s not without its challenges.
So, what makes a good primary teacher? In order to thrive in a primary classroom setting, there is always plenty for teachers to consider, regardless of whether they’re newly qualified or with years of experience.
Here are some top tips to help primary school teachers enjoy long and successful careers in the education sector.

Positivity is a must

The vast majority of pupils will respond well to praise, so a primary teacher should look to encourage their pupils at every opportunity.
From recognising hard work, achievements or creativity, being positive can help pupils to feel at ease in the classroom too, which in turn should help to boost behaviour.

Focus on subject knowledge

As primary school teachers need to have a vast wealth of basic knowledge across a number of different subjects, it’s important to stay up-to-date.
A teacher should think about any curriculum changes and ensure that they understand how those changes will impact on what is taught.
At the same time, it’s important to plug any subject-specific gaps in knowledge that might appear during lesson planning.

Build strong parent-teacher relationships

Parents play a pivotal role in the education of their children, so it’s important to have them on-side.
One of the easiest ways to have regular contact with parents is to be available at the end of the school day, so that chat can take place when they are collecting their children.
Primary school teachers may wish to update parents on that day’s activities, any specific areas of progress that their children are making, or to hand over information on school events.

Planning and organisation

Most primary school children have very short attention spans, so keeping them engaged in lessons requires plenty of planning and organisation.
A teacher will need to recognise that pupils learn in many different ways – be it visually, through doing something, or by listening – and they should be given options to learn in a way that suits them.
Tasks should have a clear focus point though and should be neither too hard nor too easy – this is likely to result in misbehaviour or boredom among pupils if a primary school teacher does not plan effectively.
Read our article on planning and organisation strategies for primary teachers.

Look at the classroom environment

The classroom environment has a big impact on how pupils will interact with both the teacher and those around them.
All efforts should be made to ensure that a positive welcoming environment exists and that pupils feel they can speak up if they have any problems.
You can view all of our primary school teacher jobs here or alternatively you can submit your CV - your local education recruitment consultant will get in touch with you shortly.

SEN Teaching Jobs

Yes you can! You can complete your 2 year induction in either full-time work or while working on long-term supply. Only placements of one full term will count towards your induction, and you need to complete the full time equivalent of two full academic years.
For the latest guidance on your induction, visit the Early Career Framework Guide.

Can you complete your induction whilst on supply?

Supply teachers are teachers that have been placed into schools on a daily, short-term or long term basis to cover teacher absences or when temporary vacancies exist to maintain a regular teaching schedule.
Permanent Teachers are on long-term employment contracts with a specific school. They are regular members of the school's staff.
Teaching Supply is a popular route into teaching for Early Career Teachers (ECTs) as it enables them to scope out different schools and gain experience while deciding which school or role is right for them.
Others opt for supply teaching for its flexibility, as they can pick when and where they want to work, meaning they can opt for roles that meet their availability.

What is the difference between a Supply Teacher and a Permanent Teacher?
