SEMH Specialist Teaching Assistant

Tradewind Recruitment is working with a variety of supportive and inclusive primary, secondary and SEN schools across Northampton and the surrounding areas to recruit SEMH Specialist Teaching Assistants. These roles are ideal for individuals who are passionate about supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and helping them thrive both academically and emotionally.
Schools are seeking dedicated professionals who can provide consistent, nurturing support to children who may display challenging behaviour or require additional emotional regulation support. Roles may be short-term, long-term, or ongoing depending on school needs, making this a great opportunity for candidates seeking flexibility or longer-term placements.
The Role:
Provide one-to-one and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs
Support emotional regulation, resilience, and positive behaviour strategies
Implement behaviour support plans and interventions
Create a calm, structured, and safe learning environment
Work closely with class teachers, SEND teams, and pastoral staff
Support pupils during lessons, transitions, and unstructured times
The Ideal Candidate:
Experience supporting children with SEMH needs, behaviour challenges, or additional needs
Backgrounds in education, SEND, youth work, care, or mental health support are welcome
Calm, patient, and resilient with a nurturing approach
Confident in managing behaviour using positive and trauma-informed strategies
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Committed to helping pupils build confidence and independence
