Autism Support Worker

Location: Preston
Contract Type: Full-time and Part-time
Salary: £15 - £16 per hour


About the Role:

We are seeking a compassionate, committed, and proactive Autism Support Worker to join our team supporting children and young people with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC). This is a highly rewarding role where you'll make a real difference in helping students develop their communication, confidence, independence, and emotional well-being.

You will work either 1:1 or with small groups in a structured, nurturing environment, supporting pupils with varying levels of need including non-verbal communication, sensory processing differences, and social interaction challenges.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide consistent and personalised support to pupils with autism

  • Assist with communication strategies, including PECS, Makaton, or AAC devices

  • Support students with transitions, routines, and activities of daily living

  • Promote emotional regulation and use positive behaviour support techniques

  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and families to meet EHCP targets

  • Use visual timetables, social stories, and sensory regulation tools

  • Encourage social interaction and build trusting relationships

  • Record progress and contribute to planning and review meetings


Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Experience working with children or young people with autism (in school, care, or community settings)

  • A calm, patient, and empathetic approach

  • Knowledge of autism-specific strategies (TEACCH, SPELL framework, etc.)

  • Understanding of sensory needs and how to support them

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills

  • Flexibility and a good sense of humour


Desirable Qualifications (Not Essential):

  • Level 2 or 3 qualification in Health & Social Care, Education, or similar

  • Training in Team Teach, PECS, Makaton, or First Aid

  • DBS check (or willingness to obtain one)

  • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection protocols
