Autism Support Worker
Location: Preston
Contract Type: Full-time and Part-time
Salary: £15 - £16 per hour
About the Role:
We are seeking a compassionate, committed, and proactive Autism Support Worker to join our team supporting children and young people with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC). This is a highly rewarding role where you'll make a real difference in helping students develop their communication, confidence, independence, and emotional well-being.
You will work either 1:1 or with small groups in a structured, nurturing environment, supporting pupils with varying levels of need including non-verbal communication, sensory processing differences, and social interaction challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide consistent and personalised support to pupils with autism
Assist with communication strategies, including PECS, Makaton, or AAC devices
Support students with transitions, routines, and activities of daily living
Promote emotional regulation and use positive behaviour support techniques
Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and families to meet EHCP targets
Use visual timetables, social stories, and sensory regulation tools
Encourage social interaction and build trusting relationships
Record progress and contribute to planning and review meetings
Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Experience working with children or young people with autism (in school, care, or community settings)
A calm, patient, and empathetic approach
Knowledge of autism-specific strategies (TEACCH, SPELL framework, etc.)
Understanding of sensory needs and how to support them
Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Flexibility and a good sense of humour
Desirable Qualifications (Not Essential):
Level 2 or 3 qualification in Health & Social Care, Education, or similar
Training in Team Teach, PECS, Makaton, or First Aid
DBS check (or willingness to obtain one)
Understanding of safeguarding and child protection protocols
